Sweetwaters serves 900 free Thanksgiving dinners

BURLINGTON, Vt. —In their 23rd year, many of the volunteers at Sweetwater’s have their jobs down pat. But for some of the people they served, the experience was something new. “This is the first time, I’m getting to have Thanksgiving in a restaurant,” said Shanan Duba. She came up from Rutland to spend the holiday with her family. “When I’m down there, I’ve got no family down there,” said Duba.

Thanks to the community meal, it was also her young niece, Ava’s, first time spending Thanksgiving with the whole family. “Not everybody at once, probably not, this is great, it helps us all be together,” said Ava’s grandfather, Bruce Jackson. In the kitchen, they were busy preparing 750 pounds of turkey, and 400 pounds of stuffing, and don’t forget the cranberry sauce…
